The US Army has created an official guide to online operational security (OPSEC, for short). Looks like they're taking some cues from the world's greatest milbloggers:
With a guest appearence from Matt Gallagher, author of Kaboom, an excellent war memoir.
And, of course, featuring a quote from one of the pioneers of milblogging: "Write as though Osama and your mama are reading".

Would love to meet the PowerPoint Ranger that put this together, considering my blog violated neither OPSEC nor UCMJ.
ReplyDeleteClowns gonna be clowns...
Well, maybe UCMJ, but I know some JAG lawyers that would argue otherwise.
ReplyDeleteWhat if OBL is yo' momma?
ReplyDeleteThey sure thought they were funny using that particular screen cap/entry title.
ReplyDeleteI will admit that Kaboom's most infamous post is a good topic for discussion. (And I say that as someone who has definitely skirted "the line" here and there)
ReplyDeleteHowever, Matt is right, it's not a security issue. And the snide "save it for your memoirs" remark is uncalled for. Matt got out of the Army, put them in his memoirs, and his book is selling like wildfire. I think he's laughing last on this one...
This actually doesn't strike me as much of a swipe. They posted a screen shot of his blog when telling soldiers to think before they post. I haven't read Gallagher's blog, but could it be that they were referencing him as some one who did it right? I mean they even borrowed his OBL/mama advice.
ReplyDeleteThe screencap/post struck me for 2 reasons.
ReplyDelete1. It was an entry from a time when Gallagher was not even authoring the blog.
2. The title of the post "Publicity is...a good thing?" certainly strikes me as snide as well.
Bwahaha "Write like Osama and your mama are readers" - that's one of my two cardinal rules for milblogs.
ReplyDeleteThe other is "When milblogs are outlawed, only outlaws will have milblogs" - but that's intended for the chain of command.
Seeing it there ranks almost up with seeing my logo on the MNC-I screensaver, or the "Mudville Gazette: the one-stop shop - for terrorists!!!!" quote.
