This week in 1944...


Thanks to the guys at the US Naval Institute Blog for this fantastic bit of historical research.

On 3 January 1944, the helicopter--specifically a Sikorsky R-4 Hoverfly--first proved its value as a capable addition to air forces by delivering medical supplies to a damaged US Navy destroyer in the Atlantic Ocean.

So here's to all the resuces, medical evacuations and emergency resupply missions since then!
